Achieve and Maintain Compliance with SDWA in Washington Series 2 of 3: Water Main Flushing and Cross Connections

These workshops will count towards Continuing Education Units that will be recognized by the Washington State Department of Health/Washington Certification Services. Each two-hour module will count as 0.2 Washington Continuing Education Units, attending the entire series will count as 0.6 Washington Continuing Education Units.

A well planned and systematically executed water main flushing program can decrease water age in dead ends of a distribution system, restore chlorine residuals, remove sediments and other deposits, and result in overall improvement in water quality. A cross-connection is any point in a water distribution system where physical, chemical, biological or other contaminants may come into contact with potable water. A cross-connection can be actual or potential. Most are created inadvertently on the customer's premises. Cross-connections are a dynamic problem since plumbing systems are constantly being installed, altered and extended. According to the American Water Works Association Research Foundation (AWWARF), cross-connections are the greatest contributing factor to waterborne disease outbreaks in the U.S. AWWARF estimates that more than 100,000 new cross-connections are established each and every day.

At the completion of this lesson, participants will be able to:

·       Describe the importance of water main flushing.

·       Prepare a simple checklist for flushing a hydrant.

·       Identify the components of an effective flushing program.

·     Conduct a flushing program.

·       Define what a cross connection is, and recognize its occurrence.

·       Explain how cross connections can impact public health.

·       Describe requirements for cross connection control.

·       Outline emergency responses for backflow events

The intended audience is operators, managers, and anyone responsible for emergency response for maintaining distribution system water quality.
