Description:
Providing safe drinking water to the public is a challenging task! Once a sufficient water source has been found, water operators need to determine what contaminants or pollutants may be in the water source. Once water quality is determined the selection of water treatment techniques and chemicals may need to be established. The water treatment technique may involve chemicals and filtration. Systems will usually decide between conventional filtration, direct filtration, greensand filtration for mineral removal, supplemental filtration for taste and odor or membrane filtration. Most water systems will also need to determine the best disinfection method for their final product, which usually consists of chlorine products, chloramines, or chlorine dioxide. Systems may also select Ozone or Ultraviolet Light as part of their disinfection strategy. Once the water has been treated, it needs to be monitored accurately to make sure that all the treatment processes have successfully treated the water to ensure safe drinking water for the public.
Participants will learn:
· Source water quality parameters
· Drinking water treatment chemical types and advantages/disadvantages
· Water filtration methods and strengths and weaknesses
