Description:
The issue of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in drinking water is a growing concern for many water systems, as regulations and public health implications continue to evolve. Disinfection byproducts are chemicals formed when disinfectants like chlorine react with natural organic matter in the water. These byproducts, including trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs), have been linked to potential health risks, including cancer and reproductive issues. As DBP regulations become stricter, water systems are tasked with balancing effective disinfection by minimizing these harmful compounds. This session provides valuable insights into DBP formation, health concerns, and strategies for water systems to optimize treatment processes while staying compliant.
Participants will learn:
· What disinfection byproducts are and how they form
· The health risks associated with DBPs, including carcinogenic and reproductive effects
· Key regulatory requirements and compliance standards for DBPs (e.g., EPA Stage 1 & 2 DBP Rules)
· Effective disinfection methods and strategies to minimize DBP formation
· Treatment options and technologies for reducing DBP levels in drinking water
The recommended audience includes board members, managers and operators.
