Description:
We are inviting you to join us on March 19 and learn about the California Technical
Assistance Providers (CalTAP) programs. These programs are funded by the California
State Water Resources Control Board in order to provide various resources and tools
for public water systems throughout California.
The services offered include onsite technical assistance and free workshops, as well as other resources. The morning session will include an introduction to the CalTAP providers, services provided or offered and a regulatory update for public water systems. The afternoon sessions will consist of two different tracks designed to assist the public water system professional.
Track 1: Backup Power Basics for Small Water Systems | Technical
Power outages don’t stop the need for continuous water service that protects water quality, pressure, and health. This course introduces small water system operators to the fundamentals of generators — including key concepts in generator operation, maintenance, and system compatibility. Topics include generator types, fuel sources, safety procedures, routine inspections, and testing schedules. By the end of the session, operators will gain practical knowledge to support emergency preparedness and ensure system reliability during power interruptions.
Track 1: Securing Backup Power for Water Utilities | Managerial and Financial Aspect
Planning a backup generator goes beyond buying equipment—it's a critical infrastructure project requiring coordination, compliance, and clear communication with engineers, contractors, and funding agencies. This course helps water system managers lead generator projects from start to finish, covering working with engineers, sizing generators, exploring funding options like DWSRF and emergency grants, and managing construction and permitting.
Track 2: California Drought Regulations for Small Water Systems | Technical
At the heart of drought resilience in California for schools and small water suppliers with less than 3,000 connections is Senate Bill 552. In this workshop session we will walk through guidance to improve and implement drought planning for smaller water systems and rural communities.
You will acquire specific measures and planning elements tailored to address the increasing risk of drought and water shortage vulnerability in your water system.
Track 2: Finding Dollars in a Drought | Managerial and Financial Aspect
Drought regulations in California can be tough to navigate when it comes to financial sustainability and effective management. This class focuses on the financial and managerial side of drought planning and compliance. We’ll cover how to build realistic drought budgets, manage limited funds, and utilize state and federal resources to support drought resilience. You’ll learn how to communicate with your board and customers, stay on top of reporting requirements, and tap into funding opportunities that support drought resilience. Whether you're an operator, system manager, board member, or on the administrative side, this session offers practical tools to help you lead with confidence when water is scarce.
