Water system personnel are not confronted with emergencies on a regular basis, and staff may become complacent and not plan appropriately for emergencies. This learning experience will share the types of emergencies that public water systems may encounter that may lead to water outages, water contamination and harm to humans or facilities.

The audience will learn the importance of a Vulnerability Assessment, a Needs Assessment and the steps for developing an Emergency Response Plan. Examples will be given by the trainer that has been through a natural disaster and water outages. Resources will be provided that can further assist the attendees with preparing for and recovering from an emergency or a natural disaster.

Steps for a Small Water System Emergency Preparation

·    Vulnerability assessment and a Needs Assessment (Sanitary Surveys)

·    Build an Emergency Response Plan

·    Importance of Generators

·    Mutual Aid Agreements

·    Financial Planning

The primary purpose of the public water system staff and governance is to provide safe and aesthetically pleasing drinking water for their customers under sufficient pressure. This can be challenging for a public water system during and immediately after an emergency that affects operations.

This training will be presented to provide decision makers, operators and managers with basic knowledge and emphasize tools/resources available for utilities to recover quickly from an emergency that has caused a water outage, water contamination and/or harm to humans.

Considerations for Small Water System Recovery following a fire disaster or other emergency

·    Command center

·    Contact Mutual Aid partners

·    Reference Emergency Response Plan steps for recovery

·    Fuel for generators

·    Financial assistance and Technical Assistance
